City of Barcelona Awards 2024 recognise excellence in the field of science
Following the awards for culture, given in March, the awards in the science categories go to Kim van Daalen and Rachel Lowe, Laura Soucek and Jose Antonio Garrido and Kostas Kostarelos.
This year in their 75th edition, this is the first time the City of Barcelona Awards have recognised excellence in the field of research and investigation, with their own section, different to the rest of the categories awarded in March. The goal is to offer more specific appreciation for the professionals that help towards the development of the city in this sphere.
The awards, worth the sum of 9,500 euros, go to:
- Environmental and Earth Sciences: Awarded to the scientists Kim van Daalen and Rachel Lowe for their study 2024 Europe report of the Lancet Countdown on health and climate change: unprecedented warming demands unprecedented actions. The jury highlighted the innovation, scope and important contribution to science by the study, as well as its broad international collaboration, considering the publication a reference work for cross-disciplinary research on the impact of climate change on health.
- Life Sciences: Awarded to the researcher Laura Soucek for MYC targeting by OMO-103 in solid tumours: a phase 1 trial, published in the magazine Nature Medicine, using a clinical trial to demonstrate the validity of the MYC protein as a therapeutic target for the treatment of solid tumours.
- Experimental Science and Technology: Awarded to the scientists Jose Antonio Garrido and Kostas Kostarelos for the article Nanoporous graphene-based thin-film microelectrodes for in vivo-high-resolution neural recording and stimulation, which develops graphene-based technology allowing for microimplants in the field of neuromedicine, in the analysis stage.
The jury also agreed to give a special mention to Marcel Guàrdia for his article Why are inner planets not inclined?, which demonstrates a mathematical theory about the instability of planetary system, offering a plausible explanation for the stability of our solar system.
