Barcelona City Council, through the Directorate for Human Rights, Global Justice and Cooperation, has launched a new humanitarian aid call worth 300,000 euros, coming from the city’s commitment to devote 0.7% of its budget to international aid. These subsidies are intended to fund humanitarian aid in Sudan and its neighbouring countries of Southern Sudan, Chad, Ethiopia, the Central African Republic and Uganda.

The funding is exclusively aimed at organisations already accredited by the City Council as experts in humanitarian and emergency action. The application period will open early in May and take into consideration factors such as previous experience and the organisation’s operation in the country and the area of action in question.

Projects looking for funding must begin in 2025 and last a maximum of 12 months. The maximum amount for each project is 100,000 euros and the subsidy may not exceed 80% of the overall cost of the operation. Projects must be aimed at the civilian population who are the victim of the humanitarian crisis, with particular attention to the most vulnerable, owing to age, diversity or gender.

The aid is aimed at sectors linked to the care of victims of the conflict, for instance medical assistance or psycho-social support, health, food, water, sanitation and hygiene, shelter, renovation or reconstruction of housing, schools and more.

The situation is this region is critical. According to figures from the UNHCR, 12.7 million people have had to leave their homes since 2023. This is a conflict that gets little coverage and which requires immediate coordinated action from the international community.
